What makes premium domains a good investment?
Resale: One of the few asset classes that can be resold at high multiples of the original purchase price.
Passive Income: You can list your premium domains on high trafficked resale portals like Godaddy, Afternic, Dan, Sedo, etc. for free. Place any asking price on your domains and wait for the right buyer. When that buyer comes along you get a “Sold” email. Within a few days you will receive a wire for 75 – 85% of the transaction.
Instant utility: Unlike most investments, premium domains have instant utility. You can place ads on an unused premium domain or use it for your next project.
Trending Value: Every premium domain has unique value in itself that can change over time based on keywords. A domain name worth $500 today could be worth $500,000 net week if certain keyword begins trending.
Where do you find your domains?
We find domains in auctions, private sellers, and some that have been hand registered since the early 2000s.
How do you select your domains?
When selecting premium domains for resale we use typical metrics such as domain age, keyword trends, domain history, similar sales, and use of the keyword in alternative extensions. We also have some additional and less common techniques that we have developed over the past decade.
Is there a limit to how many domains I can buy from you at wholesale prices?
Yes, we only look to sell a portion of our domains wholesale on an annual basis. This is based on cash flow requirements at the current time. Throughout the year we will temporarily shut down wholesale offerings.
Can we choose the domains we want from a larger list?
Yes, we will send you a list of 5k – 10k premium domains. You get to cherry pick the ones you want!
Almost all of the domains in your portfolio are dot com. Why?
Dot com is the bedrock extension of domain names. People from every nation recognize the value in a dot com domain. But, don’t take our word for it. Try the following: go to www.namebio.com This site keeps an active list of premium domains sold on the aftermarket that are publicly reported. You will see a drop down menu for the field – date range. Choose any date and click search. Notice how many of the domains end in .com? That’s right, almost all of them. In this niche there is dot com and then there is everything else.
What is your minimum bulk order?
Our minimum order for bulk pricing is 100 domains. We do offer huge discounts off retail for those only looking to buy one or a few premium domains.
Can I buy a single domain or just a few?
If there is a specific name or names you really want we can sell them to you at our retail price -20%. In general we sale in bulk directly to other investors. We sell retail on sales channels such as godaddy, dan.com, sedo, etc.
How much do you charge per domain in a bulk/wholesale transaction?
Typical pricing is in the range of 4-10% of Godaddy valuation. For example, a domain with a Godaddy Valuation of $1,500 would be priced at $75 in one of our bulk sales (Assuming 5%). For up to date pricing information please go here.
Can we buy domains from the same places you do?
In most cases, yes. The two main ingredients you need to build a premium domain portfolio are time and money. The money ingredient is self explanatory. The time investment is extensive. Not only do you need to spend 4-8 hours a day sorting through data, participating in auctions, etc but there is also a learning curve involved in choosing the right domains that can be a little steep for beginners. At MagnificentDomains.com we give you a list of names we have already bought and determined to be premium for resale. You pay slightly more than you would per domain at auction, but you save a significant amount of time by picking directly from our list.
Do you sell retail? If so, how much do you sell them for?
Yes, our primary business is selling domains retail. Prices range from $1,250 to $50k
Are these domains specific to a country/language?
Yes, we specifically buy English domains that have a high level of resell probability in the US, Canada, and European market.
How would you recommend reselling these domains?
Most sellers will list their domains on Afternic (owned by Godaddy). They have an extensive network of reseller sites. When someone searches for your domain name, they will see a notice that it is a premium domain name. If they buy, you will receive an email from Godaddy. A few days later you will receive a wire for 85% of the sale. A typical investor will do the following,
- Create an account on Afternic/Godaddy
- List the domains and set prices
- Wait
Do you have any retail pricing recommendations?
There are many schools of thought on premium domain pricing. Some investors are primarily concerned with holding onto their investments and price each domain at 9.9k and higher. They will sell less domains, but keep the majority of their portfolio as it grows in value. There are other investors who price all of their premium domains in the 1k – 5k range. There are other investors who mix up their pricing based on the value they see in the domain. It is not recommended to sell them cheap (<$500). Domain reselling is primarily about holding and waiting for the right buyers and then quickly turning over domains.
Are godaddy domain values accurate?
The Godaddy Value Estimator is a broad indicator of value, but it is not entirely accurate. We have seen domains sell for 50x Godaddy estimated value and likewise domains that have an estimated value of 2k that are worthless. Most of the domains in our portfolio range from an estimated value of 1k – 3k and can resell for 2k – 50k + to the right buyer.
How often do you add domains to your portfolio?
Almost daily. Make sure to check in with us a few times a year for an up to date wholesale list. How does the wholesale transaction work?
- We send you a list of 5k – 10k premium domains in our portfolio. In the spreadsheet you will see the godaddy estimated value of each domain, which can be confirmed here.
- Create a list of the domains you would like to buy (minimum 100).
- Send us the list, and we will add them to a purchase agreement.
- For new buyers we will generally use escrow.com or a similar service.
- We will then push the domains to your godaddy account or whatever domain holding account you prefer.
